The Aesthetics of Simplicity: Vincent Van Duysen

15 June, 2022

Known for his minimalist aesthetic, Belgian architect and designer Vincent van Duysen aims to create aesthetically pleasing atmospheres with a sort of warm sensuality. His work is characterised by an understated elegance, clean lines and essential forms.

Vincent Van Duysen was born in Lokeren, Belgium, in 1962. After earning a degree from the Sint-Lucas School of Architecture, Ghent, he worked with Aldo Cibic in Milan, followed by a collaboration with Jean De Meulder in Antwerp. In 1989, he established Vincent Van Duysen Architects.

Today, the firm has grown into a team of more than twenty collaborators with works ranging from product design for numerous international brands, to commercial and large-scale architectural projects, with a focus on high-end residences and furniture industry.

Gliss Master for Molteni&C is a storage system with an understated complexity. Displaying a purity of form combined with a distinct material palette of plaster, bronze, timber, and leather, Gliss Master is a unique combination of precision and softness. A quietly composed form reveals a depth of architectural detail presenting a strong consideration of both tactility and functionality. Bronze handles – with optional inset leather – are a study in ergonomics and a unique internal stepped tray demonstrates a simplicity of form rich in materiality and craft. Gliss Master is a synthesis of Van Duysen’s architectural concepts into a refined domestic language.

For the VVD Kitchen the recessed handle detail was reinterpreted in a modern and sophisticated way within the Hi-Line kitchen series. The contrast between the slim side and end units and the considerable thickness of the worktops is highlighted, interrupting the linearity of the worktop with stone sink bowls. The alternating materials and the interplay of solid and void give rise to a dynamic and at once sophisticated kitchen. Generous pull-out trays, open-ended drawers and undertop trolleys complete the project. An aluminium load-bearing structure allows for compositions to be completely suspended from the floor. Innovation is expressed with technological details such making the internal space more usable. The kitchen gains a new architectural look, thanks also to the elegant ceiling units and slim, transparent glass cupboards with soft-closing micro-hinges.
