Patricia Urquiola

THE ICONIC WOMEN OF DESIGN: Patricia Urquiola

15 June, 2022

“Women are flexible, adaptable, and able to multitask. We have to be to survive, and those two qualities—flexibility and adaptability—I like a lot in design.” – Patricia Urquiola

Art Director of one of Europe’s leading design houses, Patricia Urquiola has been at the creative helm of Cassina since 2015, leading it into new realms of creativity. Born in Oveido, Spain in 1961, Urquiola lives and works in Milan. After graduating from the University of Architecture in Madrid with Achille Castiglioni in 1989, she collaborated often with Castiglioni and Vico Magistretti before opening her own studio. Urquiola’s work is renowned as being boundary-pushing; her singular vision is hailed by many, having collaborated with some of Italy’s most prestigious design houses across her illustrious career.

Her work is showcased around the world in New York’s MoMA, the Vitra Design Museum in Basel and the V&A in London. By leading Cassina into new realms of development and enriching its creative power, Patricia Urquiola simultaneously contributes towards the force of female Art Directors demonstrating that there is a future for women in the industry.

An inviting sofa characterised by a play on movement and overlap. The formal rigour of the Beam Sofa System’s base contrasts with its inviting cushions. The sofa’s armrest can be regulated in two positions at 30° and the chain mechanism of the folded side/back cushion means that it can be positioned as desired to make the piece even more comfortable. The side view of the sofa particularly gives value to the detail of the armrest which contains the backrest in an embrace. The aesthetic value of the sofa’s sinuous and soft form is maintained thanks to the detail of a contemporary stitching ‘pinched’ around its perimeter.

Asterias, a cactus that grows in the mountainous regions of Mexico, lends its name to this new design from Patricia Urquiola. A generously-sized round table, featuring a central base reminiscent of the cactus from which it takes its name. It consists of six curved, wedge-shaped, wooden panels, applied protruding over the central plinth. The panels are 3D printed. The top features a rounded edge sub-divided, in the wood version, into four wedges that give rise to an interesting geometric pattern.

Tatou derives its name for the French term for armadillo. This lamp for Flos draws further influence from the classic armour theme, particularly that of antique Japan, which ensures dynamism, lightness and flexibility. The design concept lies in the repetition of four identical elements, each interwoven in the other to form a unified dome: this shape diffuses direct light either upwards or downwards, or through the perforated shell.

Patricia Urquiola celebrates the joy of outdoor living with a bold statement-making product inspired by the mini trampolines found in the gardens of homes in Greenland. Trampoline is a dramatic, elegant love bed with a stainless-steel structure; its soft, playful shapes are ideal for large, welcoming open-air spaces.
